Some people think when you mention elegant outdoor furniture it means expensive, luxurious, and formal. When I mention elegant outdoor furniture I am referring to the furniture you prefer to decorate and use on your patio, deck, outside living room or in your garden. This furniture is still beautiful and luxurious but it is a lot more affordable to us, and it shows how we want to live in our outdoor space. We also want this outdoor furniture to last for many years so we try to find the best quality we can afford.
Some of us only want outdoor furniture for relaxing during the spring and summer. And then there are those of us who enjoy entertaining and dining in an outdoor living environment. We need to figure out if our furniture is going to used by adults only or entire families; the safest way is to purchase the furniture with all types of people in mind. If expensive formal pieces are your preference you may find people will be afraid to sit and relax for fear of ruining your furniture. Furniture that is constructed of sturdy material may not be formal looking but is just as beautiful and will put everyone at ease for a comfortable outdoor gathering.
Most garden furniture is constructed of materials that will withstand weather and heavy usage. Some materials used can be heavy duty plastic, cast iron aluminum, rattan and wicker, wood and sometimes you can find the old fashioned 1940's "spring" chair. The Forties "spring" chair is not a good chair for sunny areas due to the fact they get very hot. They are generally used on backporches or covered areas that do not receive much sun. For direct sunlight areas cast iron aluminum or teak wood furniture with cushions of a muted color will work very well. This furniture is very sturdy and will hold up for years even under harsh weather and heavy usage. Teak furniture will also age to a silver gray over the years and it will not splinter.
Your elegant outdoor furniture does not need to be constructed of the same material, you can mix and match materials and styles. Some of your pool side gatherings can consist of a wooden bar with stools and a couple of metal bistro sets with cushions. The plastic outdoor garden furniture of today comes in a variety of colors and is very durable. The original Adirondack chair was only available in wood; today they are also available in heavy duty plastic in many colors. The majority of garden chairs of today are also stackable for easy storage during the cold winter months. Some of the plastic furniture will fade with time but a little spray paint will bring them back to life.
The following woods are generally used when building garden furniture: cedar, cypress, teak, Brazilian cherry, mahogany, and another hardwood that is called eucalyptus cladocalyx. If these woods are cared for according to the manufacturers label they should last you a good thirty years or more. This good quality wood furniture is a good choice any backyard area such as a balcony, patio, deck, flower garden, or outdoor living room.
I bet you can find an area of your backyard such as a shady area under a tree, near a pond, or in your flower garden that would be a good space for unwinding in the early evening. Try a comfortable chair to read a book, a bench for meditating, a cozy lounge chair for relaxing your entire body and taking a nap, or even a bench near a fountain or pond to listen to the water.
Now your furniture will be known as designer outdoor furniture because you have picked your own style for the way you want enjoy life. After all this is your outdoor living area for relaxing, entertaining, and/or dining, it should be exactly the way you envisioned it. Just do a little bit of homework to see the type of furniture that will hold up to your wants and needs and you could end up with some of the best elegant outdoor furniture.
